Condoms: The Best Way To Get It On In Erotic Fiction???

I’ve been writing erotic fiction since 1997 and the issue of condoms in stories has come up (no pun intended) several times. I will admit that, yes, it can throw the reader if the couple have to stop in the heat of the moment and slid into a rubber—much like in real life. However, I also agree that, yes, a story IS fiction. Sometimes practicing safe sex is not used in a story because it IS a fantasy and not a real situation.

My own personal writing rule regarding condoms is that I only write in condoms IF it is a contemporary story and the couple is having sexual intercourse for the first time or any time anal sex is being engaged. Just my personal rule though. I’m sure other authors may differ in how they use the latex sheath in their erotic works.

Recently, I came across this newly developed little wonder—the Pronto ™ condom! When I first watched the demo of easy of its application, I giggled…but wow, it’s a cool and practical idea! Bravo to the inventors of Pronto ™!

Pronto ™ may be ideal for safer real life sex, but it may also help erotic writers with a quicker, smoother way of working a condom into our stories. Just my $1.01, for what it’s worth!

So, authors and readers, how do you feel about condoms in your modern, contemporary erotic stories? We’d love to hear what YOU think! Comments, as always, are welcomed.

Thx,
Sabrina )O(

Confessions of a Bond FanGirl ...

Okay, I’ll admit, from the first time I saw MOONRAKER in 1979, I was hooked on Bond…James Bond. The British spy with a license to kill definitely had a way with women and outsmarted the bad guys with his gadgets and gizmos. It captured my imagination and kept me coming back to the box office time and time again!

Having most of the films on video/DVD, I must confess, I have my personal favorites. I love GOLDFINGER and DIAMONDS ARE FOREVER with Sean Connery. Roger Moore wowed me with MAN WITH THE GOLDEN GUN and THE SPY WHO LOVED ME. In 1983, I was in ‘Bond Heaven’ with the release of Moore’s OCTOPUSSY and Connery’s NEVER SAY NEVER AGAIN (an independent remake of THUNDERBALL)!

I’ve watched George Lazenby’s attempt at Bond in ON HER MAJESTY’S SECRET SERVICE which left me disappointed, as did Timothy Dalton’s LICENSE TO KILL; although I did like Dalton in THE LIVING DAYLIGHTS. Then, Pierce Brosnan stepped into Bond’s shoes in 1995’s GOLDENEYE to 2002’s DIE ANOTHER DAY and wowed me once again—Bond was back and better than ever!

Well, on Wednesday night I went to see the latest Bond film, CASINO ROYALE with Daniel Craig in the lead role. What can I say? It was different. The story is about Bond before and right after he gets his (in)famous license to kill. Craig plays a grittier, rawer Bond. The movie is definitely darker themed and has none of the usual Bond fanfare associated with a 007 movie. Don’t get me wrong, I liked the film and Craig portrays Bond well—tough, deadly and dangerous. However, I miss the familiar themes that make a Bond film well, a Bond film.

Oh, and as to my previous post, (see ‘Penis Double for New Bond’) no, there was no frontal nudity …well, at least in this US version. Although, I must confess, Daniel Craig does have a nice body to drool over and stunning blue eyes. And, no, it didn’t bother me that he was blonde either.

On a scale from 1 to 10, my 'Movie-o-Meter' gives CASINO ROYALE a 7.0

So how does it rate on your meter??? Let us know!

Thx,
Sabrina )O(

Support Erotica! Get CREAM'ed!

In 1997 I was new to the Internet and came across a website that was totally dedicated to (gasp!) erotica –The Erotica Readers and Writers Association!

In the last ten years, ERWA has grown and I’ve had to limit my active membership. However, I’m happy to announce Adrienne Benedicks, owner of ERWA and author/editor Lisabet Sarai have put together a collection of the best works that have appeared on ERWA! Go get CREAM’ed!

CREAM is a selection of short fiction previously published on the website. It includes an introduction by Lisabet and Adrienne plus five different themed sections with several stories in each that comprise the bulk of the book. Also included is a non-theme section of general erotica, and a section of "flashers."

This would make a great holiday gift for your lover or for yourself –so click on over to Amazon.com (or head to your favorite bookstore) and order your copy today!

Penis Double for the New Bond???

Okay, I’ve heard of stunt doubles and even body doubles, but a penis double? Yep, I found this little tid bit over at GayWired.com.

GayWired reports, ‘…co-star Judi Dench, who plays (Daniel) Craig's secret-service boss, M. In an interview last month with Britain's Daily Star tabloid, Dame Dench confirmed reports that Craig bares all in the movie, adding what must be one of the most unexpected, er, plugs for any movie ever: "It's an absolute monster!" she said of his penis. "Maybe I shouldn't have said that. How uncouth of me!"’

However, Craig, the newest 007, raised more intrigue ‘…by telling Life Style Extra, another British tabloid, that he had used penis doubles for the nude scenes. According to the rag, he "was not confident his appendage would measure up to the expectations of 007 fans and asked for stand-ins to do the nude scenes instead."’

Well, I’m a big Bond fan and, along with some friends, will be heading to the theater on Wednesday evening to see CASINO ROYALE. As far as Craig’s penis double that remains to be uh, seen. *wink*grin*

Castle of Ill-Fated Romance? Tom & Kate Think Not ...

The news is buzzing today about the wedding of Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes...I personally could care less, but the castle where they exchanged their vows has a darker history. Yahoo! News
says that Odescalchi Castle is haunted by the ghost of a De Medici duchess.

The castle was built for the wealthy Orsini family in the 15th century. According to the story it has been haunted for some 400 years by the ghost of Isabella dei Medici. Isabella was murdered by her much older husband Paolo Giordano i Orsini. Her husband learned that his young wife had had a succession of lovers who were spirited into her sleeping chamber through a secret door. The Duke strangled the Duchess with the help of four accomplices. And, if you think that’s dark read on!

The gruesome tale also goes that before Isabella was strangled, she had a habit of punishing unsatisfactory lovers by leading them through a dark passageway and pushing them into a pit lined with spikes! Pretty dark, medieval stuff, huh?

Several famous couples who exchanged their vows at the Odescalchi Castle were Tyrone Power and Linda Christian in 1949 and Martin Scorsese and Isabella Rossellini, who wed there in 1979. But these relationships all ended in divorce. However, there is a bright side, CNN star correspondent Christiane Amanpour and former US State Department spokeman James Rubin, who traded vows at the castle in 1998, are still together. For the time being ...

Feed Your Head-The Artistic Wonderland of Grace Slick

Yes, you read right…Grace Slick, as in legendary classic rock singer of Jefferson Airplane. I live in Charlotte North Carolina and a local art gallery, The Wentworth Gallery, held a special showing of Ms. Slick’s artwork. The artist herself was there, seated behind a table and chatting to an admiring crowd from 6 PM-9 PM.

I attended, helping myself to a complimentary glass of red wine and milled around the exhibit of bright, colorful paintings. According to Creative Loafing, Ms. Slick is 67 years old. She makes a bold, striking appearance with her lush, long white hair pulled back from her strong features and has a wonderful speaking voice (what I got to hear of it, because the crowd was thick around her).

Her exhibit consists of her paintings of Alice in Wonderland, some portraits of her rock-n-roll friends (also legends), several nude line drawings and a few other striking pieces.

I had two favorite paintings. The first one was titled JANIS WOOD NYMPH. Ms. Slick wrote about this painting, “Puckish – the Wood Nymph – a Jello and iron woman/girl.” She also describes Janis as “radiant and consuming.”

My second favorite was DORMOUSE. It’s a painting of Wonderland’s Dormouse juggling above his head a bunch of colorful letters. Ms. Slick says of the painting, “In my picture, which is completely outside the realm of the book, this little guy is delighting in the beauty of words. Feed your head. What I take from the book is my own stream of conscious and what you take is another view of the paranormal.” As an author and poet, I totally fell in love with the whole concept of this piece!

Ms. Slick and her artwork will be at The Wentworth Gallery for one more showing tomorrow (Saturday, 11/18) from 6 PM to 9 PM at the SouthPark Mall in Charlotte NC. Her artwork can be viewed online by Flash Player at http://www.areaarts.com. Of course the art’s priced in the thousands of dollars. However, I really enjoyed the rare opportunity to actually walk around, view her work, have a glass of fine wine and catch a glimpse or two of Grace Slick. It was totally worth it!

Judging A Book By Its Cover ...

I know, I know –we’ve all heard the saying before. “Never judge a book by its cover.” However, IMHO, the publishing houses art departments have gotten wi$e to romance readers. Actor/model Nathan Kamp is pretty darn hot! I first became aware of him on the cover of Angela Knight’s MASTER OF WOLVES. Then, to my delight, I found out that his handsome face and impressive body parts have adorned many book covers of the genre--from paranormal to historical romance!

I recently came across an impressive pictorial rundown of Nathan Kamp’s covers on Amazon.com through Listmania. To my own amusement, I found out that over half of my recent book purchases had Kamp, in some form or face, on the cover! I wondered was it the man on the cover that drew my attention or was I attracted to the story & its author. Okay, in all honesty I will say that I’ve enjoyed the authors & their stories. However, ladies, let’s face it …the breathtaking male on the cover is a real bonus!

The picture above is an extended art piece of Nathan Kamp for the cover of Majorie M. Liu’s new book, SOUL SONG due out in July 2007. Yum! And, yes, I’m looking forward to reading the book too!

So, are you drawn to books by the cover or by the blurb? Be honest and post your answers to our comments section –Thx!

Jack Palance 1917-2006

Actor Jack Palance will be best remembered for his movie roles such as the craggy-faced menace in "Shane," "Sudden Fear" and other films, but he also turned successfully to comedy in his 70s with his Oscar-winning self-parody in "City Slickers”.

However, most vampire movie fans will remember him as Count Dracula. According to Wikipedia, in 1973, a major television movie version of DRACULA starring Palance was produced by Dan Curtis, best known for producing the gothic soap opera Dark Shadows from a script by sci-fi favorite Richard Matheson.

Filmed in Yugoslavia and England, it was a relatively faithful to the novel, though it tried to paint Dracula as a tragic, rather than evil, character in search of his lost love. It also drew the connection between Dracula and the historical figure of Vlad the Impaler, which was a popular notion at the time. In these respects, it is a close fore-runner to Coppola's later film. This film can be purchased on DVD through Amazon.com and other movie resourses.

Interview with Scrap Fairy Designs

Today I’m happy to be interviewing Julie, who is one of the owners of SCRAP FAIRY DESIGNS. SFD creates promotional videos and designs MySpace sites for authors, publishers and their books.

Sabrina: Julie, will you please tell us a little bit about yourself?

Julie: I am an obsessed reader who decided to turn her love of romance reading into a multi-faced career. I am an online bookseller, BookPeek creator, MySpace page designer, and an aspiring author. I know it sounds like a lot, and it is, but I love every minute of it. I currently dwell in the suburbs of Charlotte, North Carolina where I spend all of my time either in front of the computer or with my family.

Sabrina: Why did you decide to begin Scrap Fairy Designs?

Julie: In 2006, my partner and good friend Kendra and I wanted to give authors with little or no budget the opportunity to have a book video. As a natural extension of that we saw a need to help authors not familiar with MySpace realize the huge potential market already in place for authors and readers alike. With MySpace there is a lot more you can do to reach those potential readers besides just having a site.

Sabrina: What does Scrap Fairy Designs offer for authors?

Julie: We offer quality videos and MySpace sites at affordable prices. You can purchase videos and custom MySpace designs from us in a range of $100 to $250. Videos are placed on several different upload sites, the author’s site, our MySpace page as well as links on reader groups. With MySpace design you not only get the initial design but we offer education that helps you market effectively as well as a maintenance plan for updating your page.

Sabrina: What makes your company different from other video book promo companies?

Julie: Our love for the romance genre and all of its forms. Our prices and our dedication to authors and readers.

Sabrina: What do you believe is in the future for video book promotions?

Julie: As Book Videos grow in popularity, distribution is growing as well. It is our hope that it will become standard for bookstores to have book videos playing on their in-store TV area. And for review sites to offer links to the author video as well as place of purchase.

Sabrina: How can authors get in touch with you to discuss promotional videos?

Julie: We can be reached at info@scrapfairydesigns.com & www.myspace.com/scrapfairydesigns

Thanks, Julie, for an awesome interview! We’re looking forward to seeing more from SCRAP FAIRY DESIGNS in the very near future!

Cursing Is Good For You!

Faye Flam of The Philadelphia Inquirer asks the question, “Why are sex words our worst swearwords?”

Flam writes, “Several weeks ago the editors at the Philadelphia Inquirer debated whether to allow more dirty words in the paper. There was talk of loosening the restrictions on damn, which we've long placed in our category of lesser offenders though it implies something horrendous - condemnation to hell (a word we're also easing up on).

Topping our list of the worst possible words is the F-word, though in its literal sense it conveys something very nice. Writers are not specifically forbidden to use it but there are enough hoops to jump through that nobody has broken the F- barrier yet.

It's listed in our highest security class of obscenity, along with three synonyms for penis, two for vagina, two slang terms for oral sex, two variants on animal waste products and one expression that employs the F-word in an oedipal context.

What does this say about our society, and is there any scientific explanation for why people yell out a word for sex when they stub their toes?”

Flam further notes, “Overall, the scientific evidence suggests swearing is good for you, says psycholinguist Timothy Jay of Massachusetts College of the Liberal Arts and author of Cursing in America.

We're the only animal that can curse, he says, which sometimes helps us avoid physical violence. "It allows us to express our emotions symbolically and at a distance." For example, Jay says, when a woman was weaving in front of him on the road that morning he was able to call her a "dumb ass" instead of getting out of his car and biting her.”

Flam writes that Americans rely heavily on the F-word, which, she concludes, “In addition to helping Dick Cheney refrain from biting all the Democrats in Congress, it represents the most direct and concise English term for sexual intercourse.

Some commentators have warned that we're wearing out the poor word with gross overuse, draining it of its original cathartic power. But Jay says we have nothing to worry about. It's an old word, possibly stemming from German and not an acronym for For Unlawful Carnal Knowledge, as urban legend has it. It's been part of the English language for more than 1,000 years, he said, and it's still so taboo you can't say it on TV or in school. Or in the newspaper.”

For Faye Flam’s full & enlightening article check out SunJournal.com

So, dear readers, what are your thoughts on cursing? Please feel free to comment! :)

SHORTBUS - "You Have To Get On To Get Off"

A MOVIE REVIEW BY SABRINA LUNA

Last night I went to see SHORTBUS, which is an independent film by writer/director John Michael Cameron. Let's say that I will never hear THE STAR-SPANGLED BANNER the same way again --LOL!

The story takes place in post-9/11 New York City. Sophie, is a Chinese-Canadian sex therapist (she prefers couples counselor) who has never had an orgasm. She is befriended by two of her clients, Jamie and James, a gay couple, who are exploring the possibilities of an open relationship and dealing with their own emotional issues.

Jamie and James invite Sophie to an underground salon called “The Shortbus”. Toss in a quirky dominatrix, a drag queen salon manager, an elderly former mayor and a human pile of slipping, slithering bodies and, IMHO, you have one helluva good indie movie! As the story reflects the characters working through their emotional and sexual issues, it is both serious and cleverly funny. The bitter sweetness of this film creates a balance and I highly recommend it!

However, be forewarned, the actors in this film DO THEIR OWN STUNTS! Yes, folks, the SEX in this film is REAL –nudity, masturbation and intercourse. No, it is NOT PORN. It is a bittersweet story with interesting characters and artistically filmed. So, if you have the yen for something different, then this movie is for you!

I live in Charlotte, North Carolina. SHORTBUS is now playing at The Manor Theatre on Providence Road. Check listings for showtimes. For those of you in other cities, I hope you get a chance to see this independent film.

If you’ve seen this film and would like to comment, please feel free to do so –Kitty and I encourage interaction with our readers. Thx!
