A lovely review for Sanctified!

Yesterday, I was pleasantly surprised and positively thrilled to learn that author Ciar Cullen has posted a review of Sanctified on her author blog! Check out Ms. Cullen's remarks here:

http://ciarcullen.blogspot.com/2007/08/review-sanctified-by-katrina-strauss.html

While I've bumped into Ms. Cullen here and there on the Internet, I've never had the privilege of really chatting with her. So her endorsement is very encouraging, to say the least! Thank you, Ms. Cullen! :D

Midnight Encounters Anthology
By Crymsyn R. Hart, Sabrina Luna, Dahlia Rose, and Eliza Gayle
Whiskey Creek Torrid
Releases October 2007
ISBN 978-1-60313-037-0
Genre: Torrid Paranormal Romance

Violet and Silver: A Journey to Avalon by Crymsyn R. Hart
Celeste, a witch with her heritage running all the way back to Avalon, has done everything she can to be sure that no one finds her or find out what she is. Then, on Halloween, a night of the year when the veils between the worlds are the thinnest, she meets a man who is everything she could ever want, Tristan. But he's half vampire and half Druid. Not to mention, he's on the run too. Celeste feels as if she's known Tristan forever, and on their first night together, they take part in the Great Marriage. Thus, finding out that they are each others soul mate, and together must fulfill a prophecy. Then, Tristan disappears, until a year later when Celeste finds him and saves his life, and he then only comes back to her each year after that on Halloween. But Shortly before the 3rd year of their meeting, Celeste is taken back to her childhood home by her sister. It's a trap for both Celeste and Tristan, and the question remains: Will they be able to save each other ?

This is the first story in the Midnight Encounters Anthology. I liked how Hart didn't dwell too much on what happened during the time Celeste and Tristan were apart. I kept wanting to read to find out what was happening between these two soul mates. It has heavy sex scenes as well as heavy sexual language, to warn those who might find that offensive.

Bad Moon Rising by Sabrina Luna
Megan McShaw is a wolf in her local pack, and one night, she gets a message over a police scanner that there's a rogue wolf at the town bar. Megan goes and picks Derek up as he's running down the street…naked. She then takes him to her father's cabin in order to get him back in tip-top shape. Derek's been a lone wolf for awhile, and Megan can sense that he's searching for something OR someone. But now it's up to Megan to get him accepted into the pack, while also trying to fight off his advances that may or may not be caused by "moon fever."

Simply a great shifter romance. Luna leaves you cheering for Derek and Megan, both as a team and also lovers. There is strong sexual language, but the sex scenes themselves aren't prolonged or too explicit. The ending however will leave you feeling satisfied, while also making the whole story worthwhile.

Scaredy Kat by Dahlia Rose
Kat feels like your average, or sometimes even less than average 25 year old woman. Her friends say she's gorgeous, but she just doesn't see it, and after all of her failed relationships, she REALLY doesn't see it. So, after her friend's Halloween party, at which her friends husband tries to set her up with an accountant, who is shall we say is BO-ring, Kat tries to summon forth her true love, through magic. After all, she reasons, that there's no use in being a witch if you can't help yourself out every once in awhile. But, her spell works in a way that she never coming, sending her and her true love into highly unusual circumstances.

This story had me laughing at points, and all in all, just enjoying the read.. Rose knows just what kind of characters to throw into the mix, to keep the reader entertained. The characters learn much from each other, and help each other a lot too. A couple of heavy sex scenes, and at times a tad bit explicit, as warning. However, I did find some of the ways that the dialogue flowed (at certain points) to be a little awkward. Scaredy Kat also has a fantastic ending.

Dirty Deeds by Eliza Gayle
Megan once traded her soul for the perfect body, any girl or woman would die for: blonde, skinny, beautiful, and her sex life is amazing. But now she's employed in Hell…literally, and her boss is an ancient demon, as is she. And part of her job is description is taking the souls of those whom she beds, but she's really not cut out for the job, and therefore has a hard time meeting her monthly quotas. Now, she has 5 days to meet one month's quota, or she's turned over to the gatekeeper of hell for her punishment. And she does okay, until Drake…who also happens to be a demon…You'll just have to see where "eternity" takes her…

Three words: Sex Sex Sex. Despite the many, erotic sex scenes and some BDSM all thorough the entire story, it's very well written, and there's still a storyline, which keeps the reader drawn into what is going on, and what could or will happen.

As a whole, Midnight Encounters was very well written. All of the stories have sex scenes, but none of which drag the reader away from the storyline or plot. Every reader is bound to find something they like in each story, and the authors each bring something different and original to the table, which helped to maintain my interest in each story, and also to keep me reading to find out what the next author had in store for me. It's a great Halloween read as well, seeing as how each story takes place on or around Halloween, and each story has a tie-in to the affect the Halloween season has on each of them, whether they're a vampire, witch, or shifter.

Country western music, whiskey and cowboys—these were Gina Adams’ favorite obsessions. Yet when she strolled into The Silver Dollar Saloon, just outside the Charlotte city limits, she received inquisitive stares from more than a few folks. Half African American and half Cherokee, her mocha-colored skin and long, jet black hair set her apart from the other women in the room. However, she was fortunate. The patrons quickly returned to minding their own business…not hers.

Sipping on her Jack and coke at the bar, she surveyed the room. Gina was feeling an edginess under her skin, a deep desire to make her ‘fuck-a-cowboy’ fantasy come true. And tonight was her lucky night. From the moment she laid eyes on the tall, handsome man across the crowded room, she knew he was the one. There’s no ‘pretend’ about this one. He’s the real thing! Her gaze roamed over his hat, worn Levi’s and boots. This particular cowboy was just rough enough around the edges to pique her interest.

The cowboy met her gaze. A grin spread over his face as he slowly began to make his way through the crowd. Like an arrow aiming for a target, he had zeroed in on her too. A spark of electricity zipped through her body and turned her insides to mush.

“Howdy, miss.” He tipped his hat, still grinning from ear to ear. “Mind if I buy a pretty lady another drink?” The sweetness of his drawl washed over her like honey.

“Sure.” Gina returned his smile. “What’s your name, cowboy?”

“Clint. Clint Bowman.”

“My name’s Gina Adams. I’ll have another Jack and coke, please.” Despite the surety in her voice, she could feel her heart pounding hard. The cowboy stood close beside her and flagged down the bartender to take care of business.

Finally, with her fresh drink on the napkin in front of her, she lifted her eyes. She gazed at the man for a better look. A foot taller than her, even in her own styled boot-heels, the cowboy was smooth shaven with strong, chiseled features. From what she could see from beneath his hat, Clint’s hair appeared to be a dark shade of brown to compliment his sun kissed, warm complexion. He definitely spends lots of time outdoors, she noted with satisfaction.

Clint’s eyes were hazel, her favorite eye color. A richly golden-hued color flecked with green. Oh boy! This one could be a real heartbreaker. In the bar room light, she spied two thin, faint scars, one just above his lip and one lightly trailing down his left cheek. Telltale signs of that lived-in, rugged look that was making Gina go weak in the knees.
“So, of all the pretty ladies in the club tonight, why me?” she asked playfully, breaking the ice.

“Because you’re prettier.” Clint grinned down at her, taking a sip from his bottle of beer, then added, “And I like your sense of humor.”

“How can you like my sense of humor when you hadn’t met me until now?” Gina raised an eyebrow, perplexed.
With his beer still in his hand, he pointed a finger to her chest.

“What? My boobs?” A sudden rush of color burned her cheeks.

“Oh no, honey. I like your shirt,” he added simply.

Dumbstruck, Gina glanced down at her ‘Good Girls Do It Badder’ t-shirt. She let out a soft exhale. “Oh, that. For a minute I thought—”

“Well, I must say, the rest of the package is fine too.” Clint flashed her a cheeky grin and winked.

Gina took a sip of her drink to moisten her dry throat. Slick warmth was spreading through her sex by the mere presence of this cowboy with his hazel eyes and wicked smile. Sure, she could be catty and tell him that he had a fine package too, but she didn’t. Instead, she asked him to dance.

WOMEN REALLY DO PREFER PINK, SURVEY CLAIMS

Researchers said these differences may have a basis in evolution. Women may have developed a preference for reddish colors in association with ripe fruit and healthier faces. Men, on the other hand, have a preference for blue-hues.

"We speculate that this sex difference arose from sex-specific functional specialization in the evolutionary division of labor," says Anya Hurlbert, a neuroscientist at Newcastle University and leader of the study. "There are biological reasons for liking reddish things."

Hurlbert believes women's preference for pink may have evolved on top of a natural, universal preference for blue. "When you add it together you get the colors they intrinsically like, you get bluish red, which is sort of lilac or pink," she said.

For the full article CLICK HERE

As for Eve, Hurlbert added, maybe there was a different reason she picked that apple. "Red was the color of a good ripe fruit.”

Hmmm ...interesting.

ANOTHER PASSING: ALICE BORCHARDT

Alice Borchardt, who wrote historical romance novels in a second career after nursing, has died at 67.

Borchardt, the older sister of novelist Anne Rice, "had a natural ear for beautiful language and was a natural storyteller," Rice said.
By Mary Rourke, Times Staff Writer
August 3, 2007

Alice Borchardt, who began a second career writing historical romance novels after she worked as a nurse for many years, has died. She was 67.

Borchardt, the older sister of novelist Anne Rice, died July 24 at her home in Houston. The cause was cancer, her husband, Clifford, said Thursday.

"Alice loved to write," Anne Rice said in a statement to The Times. "She had a natural ear for beautiful language and was a natural storyteller."

Borchardt was in her mid-50s when the first of her seven novels was published. Her name is perhaps best known for her trilogy about werewolves in medieval Rome. In "The Silver Wolf," "Night of the Wolf" and "The Wolf King," the orphaned Regeane and the gladiator Maeniel both are part werewolf and part human. They contend with bullying chieftains, embattled emperors and supernatural interventions. The last book in the series was published in 2001.

Many reviews compared Borchardt with Rice. "She shares with her sister an ability to make a historical era come to life and a knack for placing sympathetic supernatural characters in them," wrote a critic for the Free Press of Ontario, Canada, in 1998.

Earlier in her literary career, Borchardt wrote more conventional historical romances. Her first novel, "Devoted" (1995), and its sequel, "Beguiled" (1997), are set in medieval France, where Owen, a powerful bishop, and Elin, a sorceress raised by Forest People, struggle to escape marauding Vikings.

"Devoted" belongs in the "heaving bosom, swollen manhood" tradition, wrote a reviewer for Booklist. The story is at its best in the "gut-roiling battle scenes," according to Publishers Weekly in 1995. "Beguiled" got similar reviews.

Borchardt was born Alice O'Brien in New Orleans on Oct. 6, 1939. She was one of five sisters. Her father, Howard, a postal worker, helped her apply for her first library card at age 7. "It was the best gift I ever received," Borchardt said in a 1999 interview with the Austin American-Statesman.

Her mother, Katherine, was a feminist who taught Alice to pursue her career goals.

The O'Brien family moved to Richardson, Texas, when Alice was a teenager. She began her nursing career in Houston, where she met and married her husband.

In addition to her husband and Rice, who lives in Rancho Mirage, Borchardt is survived by sisters Tamara Tinker of Daly City, Calif., Karen O'Brien and Micki Jenkins of Dallas. She is also survived by two nephews, Christopher T. Rice of Los Angeles and Daniel Tinker of Oakland.

After a 30-year career as a licensed vocational nurse, Borchardt faced staff reductions at the hospital where she worked.

"I prayed about it," she said in 1999. "The next day the idea for a short story came to me. A door opened, and I walked through it."

Rice encouraged Borchardt, helped her find an agent and wrote introductions to several of her books.

"We want to be the Bronte sisters," Rice said in a 1995 interview with the Houston Chronicle, referring to the sisters who wrote the gothic novels "Jane Eyre" and "Wuthering Heights." "We want to go down in history."

Contributions in Borchardt's name can be made to the American Cancer Society, P.O. Box 22718, Oklahoma City, OK 73123-1718. Details: http://www.americancancersociety.com .

My New Love: Mayan Chocolate Ice Cream!

OMG! This stuff is awesome! Haagen-Dazs lives totally up to their slogan: "made like no other"! The ice cream's inspired by the original chocolate crafted by the Mayans more than 2500 years ago. They blend rich dark chocolate with a hint of cinnamon for a magical Mayan offering --and it's sooo deliciously decadent!

When you're in the ice cream aisle, be sure to treat yourself to Haagen-Dazs' Mayan chocolate --it's totally worth it!
