Sex in the Theatre

Here's some interesting tid-bits I came across recently ...

In an adult role in the play, EQUUS, Harry Potter actor, Daniel Radcliffe impressed audiences and critics. Radcliffe, 17, performed a full frontal nude scene with a young actress onstage …this earned him a standing ovation from the audience!

UK’s The Daily Mail reports that the boy wizard "truly impressed with a bravura full-frontal display that earned him a standing ovation." The Daily Mail also reported that New York theatre producer Roger Berlind stated he would find a way to finance the show if they wanted to come to Broadway. Berlind told the Daily Mail that Daniel Radcliffe was a "natural stage performer".

A natural, huh? Hehehe—too funny! But, seriously, ‘bravo’ to Daniel on expanding his theatrical scope (no pun intended).

In other ‘sex in the theater’ related tid-bits, it is reported that the stage play, The Vagina Monologues, has been renamed at a theatre in Florida after a complaint about the title!

It will be known as The Hoohaa Monologues - a child slang word for the female organ - after a woman in Atlantic Beach complained. Bryce Pfanenstiel from The Atlantic Theatre told local TV station Channel 4 the woman said she was "offended" when her niece asked her what a vagina was. The TV network claim the play's director is not happy about the change.

Is this crazy or what?!? IMHO, The Vagina Monologues is a groundbreaking theater piece. I’ve read the book and listened to the HBO audio version performed by Eve Ensler herself…although I have seen a play version yet. And if I ever get the change to participate in a stage production—I damn sure will!

Ms. Ensler wrote the first draft of the play in 1996 after interviewing 200 women about their views on sex, relationships, and violence against females. Each monologue somehow relates to the vagina, through themes including sex, rape, birth and mutilation. To me, it’s an inspiring and empowering piece of work! For my $1.01, calling the play 'The Hoohaa Monolgues' offends ME!
