Happy Chinese New Year!

February 18th 2007 ushers in the Year of the Pig or Boar! Although the predictions don’t look very cheery, people are still celebrating the beginning of the traditional Chinese Lunar New Year!

According to Hong Kong Feng Shui master Raymond Lo, “"The Year of the Pig will not be very peaceful." The zodiac runs on a 12-year cycle, and each year is associated with the five elements that Chinese mystics make up the universe: metal, water, wood, fire and earth.

Lo further explains, “Pig years can be turbulent because they are dominated by fire and water, conflicting elements that tend to cause havoc. Fire sitting on water is a symbol of conflict and skirmish." Predictions include more fire related disasters, such as bombings, gun & firearm fatalities, as well as natural disasters.

However, there IS a bright side to the Year of the Pig! "Because of the water element in the Year of the Pig, the economy will continue to grow, which also paves the way for another round of interest rate hikes," said Peter So, a celebrity fortuneteller in Hong Kong.

The pig is one of 12 animals (or mythical animals in the case of the dragon) on the 12-year cycle of the Chinese Zodiac. This follows a 12-year cycle of a Lunar calendar. People born during Pig years are said to be polite, honest, hardworking and loyal. The Chinese also say that babies born during the Year of the Pig are lucky, which is why many like to have babies in a pig year.

A few famous 'Year of the Pig' birthdays include: Arnold Schwarzenegger, Woody Allen, Elton John and Hilary Rodham Clinton.
