Blessed Winter Solstice!

Even though the sun was not up in the sky, visitors to the UK landmark, Stonehenge, still caught a lovely glimpse of shades of blue and orange during 2008's observance of Winter Solstice.

According to the UK's Guardian, "Hundreds of druids, pagans and tourists braved the gloomy weather to gather at Stonehenge on Sunday morning to celebrate the winter solstice. The mystical stones attracted a crowd of 1,900 people, with some dressed in cloaks and robes, to see sunrise at the prehistoric site in Wiltshire."

A teaser from Sleight of Hand

Only six days left til the release of my paranormal Victorian m/m novella Sleight of Hand, which at only $2.50 could make for a nice virtual stocking stuffer this holiday season. While Samhain has already posted the opening scene here, I thought I'd share another excerpt to whet everyone's appetites. Hope you enjoy this little teaser from my yaoi-flavored steam train adventure!

Edwin sat in the center of the tufted fainting couch, spine straight and hands folded primly in his lap. Satori rummaged through the bar selection, tracing a finger across the bottles rattling gently together in time to the clack of the train wheels.

Edwin stole a glance at the magician’s backside. Satori had removed his coat, revealing his svelte frame of slightly broad shoulders tapered to a narrow waist. A strip of white silk shirt showed between the hem of his waistcoat and his tightly-fitted trousers, the waistband hanging unfashionably yet enticingly low on the hipbone.

Tearing his eyes away before they drifted lower, Edwin scanned the coach’s interior and was affected by the same vague sense of disorientation he’d experienced upon entering the carriage. The space was furnished with the usual trappings of a gentleman’s parlor, adorned in sumptuous velvets, silks, brocades, and leather, in varying hues of black and red trimmed in ebony wood, the floor checkered with black and white tiles—nothing too out of the ordinary, if perhaps a bit ornate.

What lent the private saloon such an unusual quality was that the dimensions seemed off. At first, the space had appeared a touch wider than it should have been. Now, as Edwin shook his head and blinked, the width seemed proportionate but the floor appeared to have been stretched a few feet longer. He considered that the checkerboard pattern created an optical illusion—at least that was the only logical explanation for Edwin’s skewed spatial perspective.

His gaze focused back on the bar, a curiosity unto itself. The requisite bottles of brandy and rum and such were interspersed with various sizes, shapes, and colors of bottles, jars, and crockery, appearing to serve more as a pharmacopeia than a place to shelve liquor.

“Ah, here we are,” Satori announced. He stepped from behind the curved, polished counter with a small blob-neck bottle in hand. On first appearance Edwin thought the glass to be black, but as the illusionist passed under the gasolier, Edwin noted it to be dark olive amber.

Satori levered the wire bail stopper from the neck, releasing the pressure of the contents with a soft pop, followed by the tell-tale hiss of effervescence. He passed the bottle to Edwin, the brush of fingers sending another surge of current down Edwin’s arm, charging him to the very core. Clearing his throat, Edwin wafted the opened neck under his nose. The liquid bore no scent, the fizzy substance greeting him only with a light kiss of moisture across his upper lip.

“Mineral water,” Edwin observed, one eyebrow lifted in question.

“Lithia water, to be precise.” Satori took a seat in the wingback chair directly across from Edwin. “Bottled at a secret source for which the location may not be divulged. Widely touted as a hangover cure, although users have reported other benefits.”

“Such as?” Skeptical, Edwin held the near-opaque glass up to the light. He thought back to the acrid tincture of black hellebore he’d been prescribed daily at the hospital, the one which had left him doubled over for the next hour while his gut clenched in painful spasm. After his discharge, he’d read up on the herb and learned it to be toxic. He’d concluded that the alienists were no worse than charlatans peddling snake oil.

“A calming of the mind,” Satori replied, “a soothing of the nerves.” He crossed one leg over the other and propped an elbow on the chair arm. Two fingers denting his brow, he nodded. “Drink.”

Deciding he had nothing to lose—and at the point where he would gladly welcome being poisoned—Edwin took a tentative sip. The bubbles fizzed pleasantly against his lips, while a scant taste of metal lingered on his tongue. Head tilted back, he continued drinking, allowing the cool beverage to trickle down his throat. Pausing to lick his lips, Edwin hazarded a glance at his would-be shaman and found the other man watching him intently. Despite the cool drink, Edwin felt the unwanted flush creep back up his neck. He shifted in his seat, and realized the bottle had gone dry.

Satori rose. “Very good. Let’s get started, shall we, before we enter the tunnel.”

As he took the bottle, their bare fingers brushed, jolting Edwin’s senses once again. Attempting to cover his reaction, he cupped his fist to his mouth with a feigned cough.

His ploy failed. “My dear boy, this simply won’t do,” Satori chided with a shake of his head. He set the bottle aside on the end table. “If the hypnosis is to be a success, you must relax.”

Satori nudged between his knees and thumbed Edwin’s chin. Edwin had long grown accustomed to the closeness necessitated during a physical exam and had learned to tolerate the trained, analytical touch of the medical practitioner. However, Satori was no licensed physician, and his approach came off as decidedly more intimate. Discomfited, Edwin began to shut his eyes, but instead found himself captivated by the mage’s searing gaze.

He flinched at the sensation of Satori unpinning his tie. His pulse raced at the whisper of crisp silk being slid from around his collar.

“There, doesn’t that feel better?” Satori asked.

“Yes,” Edwin conceded with a mumble, his neck free of the starched fabric.

Satori opened the first few buttons of Edwin’s shirt. Edwin swallowed, his heart pounding now. The magician cupped his face in both hands and rolled his head from side to side, tracing the pads of his thumbs across Edwin’s cheekbones. He massaged the pressure points behind Edwin’s ears. Examining the throat nodes, his touch lingered at Edwin’s throbbing jugular.

“There’s no need to be nervous, Master Edwin. Lie back and make yourself comfortable.”

Eldritch Legacy to be re-released by Loose Id

At last, I can make an official announcement! My first series, The Eldritch Legacy, has been contracted for re-release with Loose Id. The original trilogy will be revised and reprinted with additional scenes, while a fourth unpublished title, A Forfeit Owed, will be released as the first of a companion series, Once Upon a Legacy. I'm happy that the Eldritch series has found a new home, and -- if my experience with Blue Ruin is any indication -- I look forward to a continued successful relationship with Loose Id. I'll share more details once I have a re-release date on the first book, Secrets Revealed.

In short, the Eldritches will be back in all their dark, wicked, coal-eyed glory! :D

This past summer, you can image my surprise to walk into a bookstore and find a full display with a vampire theme! Summer –no where near Halloween! They were marketing the newest book releases of Laurell K. Hamilton and Sherrilyn Kenyon, surrounded by other related DVDs and books.

Let’s face it, the undead are all around us –and, this proves the media-market is not dead! A bit over saturated, maybe, but they’re still offering more of the dark characters we can’t seem to get enough of –characters like Lestat, Jean-Claude, Acheron and more!

Gone are the days when vampires were foul, bloodsucking creatures of the night. Now, vampires are uber-cool, hang out in nightclubs, dress in the latest fashions (black leather –yum!) and sometimes own the best wheels around too. Oh, and, of course, they can also kick some major @ss, win over the heroine and, in the end, save the world!

Jac silenced him with a kiss, pressing her lips against his with all the fierce passion that simmered inside her. He tasted of cinnamon and primal lust as she slipped her tongue between his lips. In the back of her mind, she wondered where he’d been all her life. Her heart panged at the thought of all the lonely nights she’d been through, but now, with her body wrapped around his, she knew he was worth waiting for.

He pulled his lips from hers, trailing kisses down the column of her throat. Jac let out a low moan as the heat of his mouth stirred emotions buried deep inside her. “Get off me!” Jac shouted, flinging the covers onto the floor. Her heart was racing as she sat up, looking around. Where was she? It took a moment to get her bearings. The room slowly came into focus. She was in bed, in a hotel room…alone.

There was no dark woods, no hideous wolf-creature attacking her. It was all a dream.

“More like a nightmare,” she muttered, retrieving the bedcover and wrapping herself in the warm, comforting material. “Damn,” Jac cursed under her breath, curling up in the bed once again. Listening to her heart return to a normal pace, the nightmare gradually dissipated as she began to focus on the day ahead.

“Time to get busy,” she sighed, tossing the cover aside and rising from the bed. A manila folder lay beside her laptop bag. Jac flipped it open, scanning its contents. Her editor’s contact had provided nothing more than a few transcriptions of town hall council meetings, a genealogical family tree and a clipping from the local newspaper.

She scanned over the scrap of paper. It was a sighting of a half-man, half-wolf spotted in town on Halloween. “A werewolf on Halloween, huh?” Jac shook her head, slipping the news clipping back into the assignment folder. “I still think it’s all a big farce,” she grumbled, but decided to get down to business—but only after a shower and a cup of coffee. These were the two things she needed every morning to jumpstart her brain.

I AM A WOMAN --AND I VOTE!

*Note from Sabrina Luna: This was recently forwarded to me in an email. It made me heartsick...and made me think. I am a voter, yet there are still women out there who don't exercise their right to vote. I sincerely hope this will change their minds!

WHY WOMEN SHOULD VOTE:

This is the story of our Grandmothers and Great-grandmothers; they lived only 90 years ago.

Remember, it was not until 1920 that women were granted the right to go to the polls and vote.

The women were wives and mothers and unprepared for the fury that would be unleashed on them. Initially they were jailed for picketing the White House, carrying signs asking for the vote.

By the end of the night, they were fighting for their lives.

Forty prison guards wielding clubs and with their warden's blessing went on a rampage against the 33 women accused of 'obstructing sidewalk traffic.'

Lucy Burns

They beat Lucy Burns, chained her hands to the cell bars above her head and left her hanging for the night, bleeding and gasping for air.

Dora Lewis

They hurled Dora Lewis into a dark cell, smashed her head against an iron bed and knocked her out cold. Her cellmate, Alice Cosu, thought Lewis was dead and suffered a heart attack. Additional affidavits describe the guards grabbing, dragging, beating, choking, slamming, pinching, twisting and kicking the women.

Thus unfolded the 'Night of Terror' on Nov. 15, 1917, when the warden at the Occoquan Workhouse in Virginia ordered his guards to 'teach a lesson' to the suffragists imprisoned there because they dared to picket Woodrow Wilson's White House for the right to vote.

For weeks, the women's only water came from an open pail. Their
food--all of it colorless slop--was infested with worms.

When one of the leaders, Alice Paul, embarked on a hunger strike, they tied her to a chair, forced a tube down her throat and poured liquid into her until she vomited. She was tortured like this for weeks until word was smuggled out to the press.

Some women won't vote this year because-why, exactly? We have carpool duties? We have to get to work? Our vote doesn't matter? It's raining?

Recently I went to a sparsely attended screening of HBO's movie 'Iron Jawed Angels..' It is a graphic depiction of the battle these women waged so that I could pull the curtain at the polling booth and have my voice heard. I am ashamed to say I needed the reminder.

All these years later, voter registration is still my passion. But the actual act of voting had become less personal for me, more rote. Frankly, voting often felt more like an obligation than a privilege. Sometimes it was inconvenient.

My friend Wendy, who is my age and studied women's history, saw the HBO movie, too. When she stopped by my desk to talk about it, she looked angry. She was--with herself. 'One thought kept coming back to me as I watched that movie,' she said.
'What would those women think of the way I use, or don't use, my right to vote? All of us take it for granted now, not just younger women, but those of us who did seek to learn.' The right to vote, she said, had become valuable to her 'all over again.'

HBO has released the movie on video and DVD . I wish all history, social studies and government teachers would include the movie in their curriculum I want it shown on Bunco night, too, and anywhere else women gather. I realize this isn't our usual idea of socializing, but we are not voting in the numbers that we should be, and I think a little shock therapy is in order.

It is jarring to watch Woodrow Wilson and his cronies try to persuade a psychiatrist to declare Alice Paul insane so that she could be permanently institutionalized. And it is inspiring to watch the doctor refuse. Alice Paul was strong, he said, and brave. That didn't make her crazy.

The doctor admonished the men: 'Courage in women is often mistaken for insanity.'

Please, if you are so inclined, pass this on to all the women you know.

We need to get out and vote and use this right that was fought so hard for by these very courageous women. Whether you vote democratic, republican or independent party

I just keep having more and more good news on here, don't I?

My good news for today is that I just got an email reply from my editor, informing me that I should please consider printing out the contract enclosed and send it back to the publisher for my follow up novel to Unity.

Where Unity tells the story of Darcy's first awareness of the world of Faerie, and her struggle to find balance between it and her real life, Awakening follows her story as she leaves Kinvara and tries to make a life for herself in Killarney. Little does she know that the world of Faerie will follow her down into that town, and Faerie itself will not remain so removed from her world as it used to be.

The story is set in Ireland and shares the mystical history that the land is rich with. I'm very excited to be told that this story has a tenuous release date of March, 2009. So keep a look out for it!

What does my Dark Tarot card mean to me?

I seem to be posting a fair bit in this half of the month. Must be a sign that I have more time available to me. Or maybe, since I just started university last Monday, it's a sign that I'm starting to better manage my time.

We can hope. :D

I'm really enjoying the promo for my newest release, Unity. I think it's because, of the novels I have published, this one is the one where I really feel that I have come out into my own. On one of the the chat loops to promote our books, a very good question was asked. "What does your card mean to you?" And it got me thinking.

I was very lucky when I finally submitted my story into the Dark Tarot series. The Temperance card was still available to submit FOR! Unity was already on my computer and written, and I knew the sorts of themes that it explored, yet there were a few cards that I thought it could fit well under.

For me, what cinched it was the wonderful cover art. I mean, look at
it.

Those colors, and patterns, my name there in the middle of it. *grins* Isn't it beautiful?

In Unity, I explore the idea of two girls falling accidentally into
the world of Faerie, a fantasy world above or behind this world. As
fairies and elves are commonly attributed to have wings at their back,
what better for me to find than a cover with that very same
illustration? Add to that the fact that the Temperance card itself
means balance -something that my girls Celeste and Darcy find through
the passage of their travels- and I was sold! I hope you all are too. ;)

I'd like to thank the creative team at Tease for creating something so
perfect. I know I'm not the only author here to think so.

New acceptance from Samhain!

I'm pleased to announce my paranormal Victorian m/m piece, Sleight of Hand, has been contracted with Samhain Publishing. Release date will be late 2008 or early 2009. While Samhain does not offer a yaoi line per se and so will not categorize the story as such, readers of that genre can be assured that Sleight of Hand bears a distinctive yaoi flavor, along with a heavy anime influence and steampunk-ish elements. (This would be the story inspired by my marathon viewing session of D.Gray-Man, if that gives you any idea!) I'll announce an official release date as soon as I have one, so stay tuned!

Well, it's that time you've all been waiting for. Well, it's what I've been waiting for, at least!

Now that I've wet your appetite for that much, let me share with you an excerpt from the novel.

Night art classes were held at the local dojo twice a week. Celeste's teacher was a slight blonde woman who had missed her calling as a teenage cheerleader and, through affiliation with the younger--and therefore cooler--students of the class, was trying to recapture her youth. Currently, Susanna was strolling up and down between the crooked rows of canvases in her class, murmuring, “Yes, very good, very good”.

When Susanna arrived by Celeste's canvas, the dark haired girl looked at her expectantly. As Susanna stared at the half finished painting, Celeste expected her to make some original comment. When Susanna only smiled accommodatingly and told her to “Carry on”, Celeste deduced her teacher was quite blind or very deluded. She had been trying for something abstract against the central figure, but the perspective was all wrong, the colors didn't quite mesh, and there was a weird thing going on with the eyes that she couldn't quite seem to fix.

'Creepy, 'Leste,'

Jasper said to her, taking some time apart from his current work of art as Susanna moved on to another round of appreciative, “Ooh, very good” to other students.

Celeste shot him a sideways look at his sudden appearance there. Jasper shrugged.

'So, who's he supposed to be?'

Celeste looked back at the canvas. There was no salvaging it now. The best she could hope for was that Susanna's blind streak would continue into the marking phase, but at the same time, she didn't really want to depend on an ignorant eye for the benefit of her marks.

'I think I saw it in a dream.'

Celeste answered him shortly, pulling the canvas down from the board and turning to the paints on the table behind her to start putting them away. From the floor, the man stared out in all his magnificence, garbed in a medieval style tunic bearing some sort of intricately designed crest on the front of it.

As Celeste moved away and started sorting through the brushes she was going to have to wash, Jasper stepped closer to the discarded canvas, still staring, bringing his hand to cup his jaw as he studied Celeste's work.

'His gaze is striking… and the colors…'

'You're my friend; you have to say that,'

Her words were dismissive. Celeste walked to the sinks and started soaking her brushes before washing them there.

'Anyway, are we on for tonight?'

'Photography at the beach? Wouldn't miss that for the world. What time were we meeting up again?'

Jasper didn't pause at her change of subject as he answered. He straightened, easily coming back to remembering there was a whole other world outside of Celeste's painting.

All paints were packed, and Celeste stuffed the ones that were hers in her bag. The others she returned to the cupboard in the back of the room.

'After dark. Say about ten?'

Jasper nodded. When she returned to the stand she had borrowed, Jasper had her canvas in his hands and was holding it up to her attention with curiosity.

'So, what are you going to do with this?'

'Nothing. I'm heading off now. It's not like I'm going to get anything more from today. If you want to come around to my place early, Natalia's making chicken curry, mild.'

Celeste was busy picking the canvas and the stand up as she spoke. She laid the stand next to the others on the rack and then the canvas, she put with the rest of the used canvases, ready to be painted over and used anew. Jasper had his eyebrows raised; she was not usually so dismissive of any artwork she made. However, he returned his expression to normal well before she turned to look at him again.

'Ooh, just the way I like it. Tell her to make lots. I'll definitely be there.'

It's been a while since I wrote here. Time to dust my spot off, I think, and make a long and insightful observation. :D

I still would like to maintain, that after the last three years that I've been finding ePublishers around the place who want to publish my writing, the best part about the ePub industry are the people you come to meet and get to know. It's hardly a controversial statement to make that ePubs open and close, will give you grief and tears of happiness, but the friends you make, people who you can trust to read your work and give you an honest opinion, and the people who's work you can read in return, are the most valuable part of the ePublishing industry, and indeed, the most valuable part of any writer's art.

Having just finished a previous project (a project set after Unity, titled Awakening) which took me the better part of half a year to write to its completion, I have recently started on a new project, the next in that series. I like to think that the series I am creating has something of a Charles De Lint slant. I've spoken about him before. Just check the tags for previous posts I've made about the fantasy author. All of the stories I am writing right now are a part of the same universe, but the characters who are main shift and change and accommodate include new characters that bring new life and interest to a series that I think would be much less if it depended on previous novels.

But these are my novels. Of course I think they are something special.

After coming out the other end of a horrible stint of writer's block, with the help of one of my reader/writer friends, I only want to thank all of the people who are patient with me, who love to read my writing, who love that I read theirs. I think that all of you know who you are. I dearly appreciate you.

Luke and Noah

Thanks to the fine folks over at http://noahandluke.com/ I am now caught up on the Luke and Noah storyline from As the World Turns. Mmm, don't actors Van Hansis and Jake Silbermann look yummy together?

As one viewer pointed out, we won't be treated to "raunchy backroom sex ala Brian and Justin of Queer as Folk", but ATWT is to be commended for pushing the envelope as far as daytime soaps go. Though it's a bit frustrating that Luke and Noah aka "Nuke" are the most chaste couple on the show, their ongoing quest to finally enjoy some "alone time" makes for good sexual tension. At one point, Noah sleeps on the couch at Luke's grandmother's farm house while Luke sleeps upstairs, but as Luke's openminded, supportive grandmother points out, that is one old-fashioned rule that applies to all single family members. So yeah, no blowjobs in the backroom at Babylon indeed! Yet for all the babysteps the writers must take to allow less favorable viewers to adjust to the idea of the hot manlovin' (though really, guys, less hugging and more kissing, please!), it's refreshing to see a couple willing to wait until the right moment to consummate their relationship. It dispels the stereotype that gay men just jump right into bed and develop the relationship later. Yes I, the yaoi-obsessed author behind the hot manlovin' BDSM monkey sex that starts early on in Blue Ruin, just said that. I'm also quite fond of the aforementioned Brian/Justin pairing from QAF because just...hot damn!!! But there's nothing wrong with light and fluffy romance, either, and Luke and Noah's story satisfies my sweet tooth very nicely. Though with that being said, I'll be glad when these poor boys finally get it on, and the damned camera better not pan away!

The storylines woven around Luke and Noah get a bit campy and convoluted at times because after all, it is an overdramatic soap opera. But what can I say -- even the twisted, cheesy plotlines have me intrigued. (Yes, as Blue Ruin readers again take pause, as I could have easily described my own series there. *heh*) Luke and Noah's story also holds a touch of sentimental value for me. Back in my adolescence, the one and only soap opera I watched was ATWT, primarily to keep up with the teenaged romance between rich girl Lily and rebel farm boy Holden. I stopped watching the show by my early twenties, and -- eventually -- stopped reading the weekly soap summary in TV Guide. Well, as it turns out, Lily and Holden are now the primary power couple of the series, and Luke is one of their kids! So yay, Lily and Holden grew up to take over the show, and they have a hot gay son with a cute boyfriend! :D

Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull

Hooray! Indiana Jones rides again!

I was very happy to see Indy team up with his long-time love, Marion Ravenwood, and a snappy, yet rebellious side-kick, Mutt Williams, for one more fun-filled adventure!

It’s wonderfully cast, has stunning visuals and lots of fast paced action. The storyline is interesting, yet not deep. However, this is a fun summer movie and is worth the box office ticket price, IMHO.

Anne Rice Answers Her Vampire Readers...

“In spite of a flood of emails asking for a Christian Lestat novel (a novel in which Lestat is redeemed), and my own comment about this in the press, I am completely putting aside this project. After prayer, meditation, and much pondering, I do not think such a novel is possible. My present focus has to be on my novels about the life of Jesus Christ and I do not want to revisit the realm of my earlier books. I thank all of you who have written to me on this, both pro and con. You have helped me to think out the question. I can assure you; as things stand now there will be no Christian Lestat novel.”

Well, what this all boils down to –Anne Rice will not be writing anymore Vampires, Witches, Talamasca or Lestat, Christianized or otherwise.

As a fan of her earlier works, I'll find solace in my treasured hardbacks and worn paperback editions and recall why I'm still drawn to and love these stories and the characters Anne Rice created.

However, most importantly, Anne Rice inspired me to tell my stories, write down my fantasies and to be an author. And, for that, I'm truly grateful. Thanks, Anne.

In other writerly news, I've finished the first draft of a new paranormal Victorian yaoi short. It was interesting to return to the dark historical/paranormal style that I honed with The Eldritch Legacy, but with the yaoi themes I've explored in the contemporary atmosphere of Blue Ruin. I need to tweak one segment, then it's off to one of my proofreaders who always does a wonderful job of critiquing my prose. Those of you familiar with both my historical and contempo work know that I craft my historical pieces with more "flourish", so I like to polish the prose on those to a fine sheen. Not that I don't take equal care with my contempo prose, mind you, but I take a simpler, dryer approach to modern settings that proves easier to edit. In other words, I don't sound nearly as snooty as I do with my historicals. ;)

Speaking of The Eldritch Legacy, I don't wish to go into detail lest I jinx myself, but I have a few options brewing in the cauldron. Basically, I'm waiting to hear back in regards to cunning Plan A, while cunning Plan B appears to be a sure bet in the event Plan A does not pan out. Plan B is not "second best" by any means, and both choices (should I find myself in the position to make one) stand to give the Eldritch series greater exposure than it saw last time around. Yet each choice also requires some weighted consideration on my part as far as short term vs. long term career goals. Yes it would be so easy to cave to impatience, opt for Plan B, and sign a contract now. On the other hand, Plan A might not necessarily prove any more viable in the long run, or... it could be "The Big Break" I've been waiting for. Whatever pans out, I hope to make a formal announcement regarding a re-release of the Eldritch series by the end of the month, so stay tuned!

What a pretty description, doesn't it completely make the story?

I was having a positive conversation with a friend about this old description in an ~~as yet, woefully... foolishly?~~ unfinished story that was started almost a year ago.

Con lifted her head, shifting the blonde bangs from her eyes. Her walk, she had down to a fine art. Even her mother could not fault it.

From behind, she appeared as a boy. Thick, platform Mary Jane shoes covered her feet, and were covered over by straight black suit pants of a boy’s cut. With that combination, Con looked as tall as many of the boys who walked the halls, and a little taller than some. That her blonde hair cropped up against the back of her head, and only a scant amount of fringe flopped over her eyes, was exactly the look she was going for. She knew she could dip her head and smile at any of the first year girls, and they in turn would smile, and blush, before finding their friends to talk about the very effeminate boy who had just flirted with them.

Con had met up with a Swedish student by the name of Kjell a little bit into her first year at uni. Brunette where she was blonde, Kjell’s walk was nothing like her own, for all that he was a member of the male species. His hair was tied back in a ponytail to the length of his shoulder blades.

‘Trying to impress the newbies?’

His deep voice made her smile, and look up into his kind green eyes.

‘Whatever would make you think that?’

‘The poets shirt. You always wear that when you’re trying to impress someone.'

It got me to thinking of other descriptions that I have used for characters over the last few years, and I was looking at a small book that I had stopped using until recently.

It's only large enough to jot disjointed ideas down in note form when I'm nowhere near a computer or completely in the mind track of doing something else, like sleeping, or being on rickety PT, or having a conversation with someone. But these were some I found, and some characters that I want recreate just based on the fractured descriptions.

Her usually bright eyes were bloodshot above high cheekbones.

Blonde hair that he'd forgotten to tie up that morning framed jaw line and compassionate blue eyes in a disheveled mess.

Chocolate brown eyes asked her a silent question as his dark fringe fell into his eyes, again.

The line of his nose and mouth were thinner, perfect for the look of distaste he pulled when he was displeased.

It seemed like she was only moving to stop herself from curling in a corner and crying the rims around her eyes even redder.

His eyes were watchful, even when his attention seemed to be elsewhere.

Italian reader Elisa Rolle, who regularly offers reviews of m/m and yaoi titles at her journal, has weighed in on Blue Ruin 2: Close to Me. Here's a snippet:

"I should confess, I was uncertain. Even if I liked a lot Blue Ruin 1, I don't like very much menages (even if they are M/M/M menages), and so when I saw the new cover of Blue Ruin 2 I was perplexed[...]I will like this new ones like the previous ones? And the answer is yes."

Reader Brenda Rodriguez has posted her own review at various forums. She expressed similar sentiments as Elisa, as well as offering her take on the presence of what she calls "girl cooties" in my yaoi. *laugh* (I'm not adverse to casting females in my yaoi, but I will assure my readers and give away plot up front in that I still adhere to the rule that only the boys get to play in yaoi-land.) It's a bit difficult to provide links to private forum threads, so Brenda has given me permission to share some snippets of her thoughts here:

"Gushy fangirl squees aside, I wanted to figure out why I liked this book so much. I mean, the premise had the potential to blow up in Katrina's face. Why take a couple that earned a place in many readers hearts and introduce a lot of conflict, including a third person, into the mix?[...] You see, I originally assumed that the series would be comprised of books with HEAs for other characters in the Blue Ruin world, not messing with Derek and Blue's HEA.

Brenda goes on to explain why she enjoyed BR2 after all:

"BR2 has many of the elements that made BR1 a great book. Obviously it helps to have visually appealing characters like Blue and Derek. The ongoing power exchange between Blue and Derek and Blue's subtle rebellions add to the mix. The simple yet engaging whodunit plot keeps things moving. The violence brings in that dark aura that gives the book an edge and makes it feel more like an anime movie. But none of those things are what makes Close To Me a great book. What really makes a difference in this book is how the characters deal with the tough situations they face as the story evolves. From an emotional standpoint, the characters faced many situations where the choice was between bad and worse. The characters were tested. They struggled. They learned lessons. And if the outcome was bittersweet, that's ok. That is an integral part of growing. So, there is no traditional HEA at the end of BR2. I guess you could say there is, if you view it as an 'on going' HEA. The point is, this is not the end of the journey. It is just one more step along the path."

And regarding those icky girl cooties:

"I should point out that I generally hate girl cooties in my m/m books. When I realized Katrina had introduced two more female characters, I had a moment of panic. Was she about to ruin the book? Luckily the answer is no. In fact, the opposite was true. These two female characters added a lot to the book. Some of my favorite moments in the book involve the girls. They are funny, refreshing and a bit like I think I would be if I had the privilege of having friends like Blue and Derek. 'Live-action yaoi' indeed!"

I feel Brenda nailed it on the head in that this series is an ongoing HEA. Though Blue Ruin took a certain direction a few books sooner than anticipated, and in a wholly different way than I'd originally envisioned, I intended all along to stick with the same ongoing relationship and show the ups and downs entailed during Derek and Blue's first few years together. What can I say? The Blue Ruin series is the result of reading the rough ride that is Yamane Ayano's Finder series, Miyamoto Kano's soap opera styled Rules, and La Nora's ongoing HEA In Death series at around the same time. Yes -- the very het relationship of Roarke and Eve from In Death, of all things, is one of the inspirations behind the hot yaoi boylovin' of Derek and Blue. Who knew? Well, now you do! ;)

Anyway, don't forget that I'm donating ten percent of BR2's first month royalties to Pantene's Beautiful Lengths. On crafting a difficult character...or, "The Lestat Defense"

I first read Interview with the Vampire when I was in the seventh grade. My father gave me his spine-worn copy after he saw I had graduated to the likes of Stephen King and had no desire to read crap like Sweet Valley High (though I perhaps, erm, read a few here and there when I was bored....). This was a few years before I went goth, as I was still in my gawky poseur kinda/sorta New Wave stage. If anything, Anne Rice's vamps may have been what steered me in a darker direction. Allow me to pat myself on the back in saying that upon the release of The Vampire Lestat a few years later, I was well familiar with Ms. Rice's work. By Queen of the Damned, I actually recommended Anne Rice to many of my newfound gothy-type friends.

I digress a bit, though. The point of today's post is -- when I first learned that Lestat would be the protagonist of the second book, my 14-year-old self was aghast. In the first book, Louis presented Lestat as a complete asshole. Yet I was curious to read more work of this nature by Anne Rice, and so with an open mind, I cracked the newly-presented hardback (courtesy of dear old Dad again) to the first page. I read the opening line: "I am the Vampire Lestat.". ‘nuff said – an introduction so confident and powerful in its sheer simplicity, and I was immediately entranced. Here we meet a narrator who is aware that many readers will be approaching him with very loaded preconceived notions of his character and personality, and so he knows he need only say his name and then immediately launches into the story before he loses us. As the story continued, I came to admire, respect and yes, love Lestat for his strengths and flaws alike. My respect for Anne Rice increased greatly as well, for here was an author who had taken a character her readers had expected to detest, and then turned him into an endearing icon of modern gothic horror and pop culture.

I eventually tired of The Vampire Chronicles around book six. My beloved Lestat had grown predictable in his actions (hmm, let me guess, by the end of this new installment, he's going to...turn someone into a vampire even if he really shouldn't?). Overall, Anne Rice lost me somewhere along the way -- not because of her new direction because hey more power to her, but because she decided with a "clarity that was brilliantly clear" or whatever that convoluted line in Blood and Gold was, that she no longer needed an editor. Yet in my own work, there is always a little bit of my favorite blond-haired, blue-eyed, anti-hero devil to be found in every lead male I’ve crafted. Yes, it's Monsieur de Lioncourt's fault that I have this thing for the hot but imperfect alpha and/or rogue male with complex personality and dark angsty secrets to be gradually revealed as we unwittingly fall under his spell.

Unbeknowst to me, this influence was in full effect when I crafted a new character for the second Blue Ruin book, Close to Me, which was just released yesterday. I had originally planned to bring Cameron Carter, Blue's former schoolyard bully nemesis, into the fold around book four. The Muse, however, had other ideas and Cameron came barging into not only Blue's life but mine in book two. I balked at first. Based on what little my readers, or hell I the author, knew of him from book one, I wasn't sure that I was even going to like Cameron, much less be able to craft a sympathetic character my readers could accept. And so finally, I gave in, told the insane Muse "Hey you're crazy but you know best", and directed Cameron to enter stage right. And then Cameron swaggered in, smiled his dimple-chinned grin, and cracked a joke to another character, and I said to myself, "I can do this." By the following chapter, I discovered Cameron's tormented past and found I had judged him wrongly. (What, you thought we authors actually plan this stuff in advance? No, many of us are clueless as to what the heck our characters are up to and figure this stuff out as we go along!) And rather than brush Cam's flaws under the rug, I utilized them, making them as much a part of his motivation as I did his strengths or his well-meant intentions. I will say this...for all the free rein I've learned to give the Muse, this was also the first time I went back and reeled the characters in a bit. I won't say how, why or where lest I give away the plot to those who have not read the story yet; but to those of you have read it already, let's just say that if you think Blue suffered a moment of weakness, you should have seen how far things went in the first draft.

By final draft, not only had Cameron grown a good deal within just the span of one book, he had forced Blue and Derek to grow, both individually and as a couple. And he forced me to grow as a writer. It wasn't until after I'd turned the manuscript into my astute editor that it finally hit me...I'd pulled a Lestat. I'd introduced a character who I expected everyone to hate -- one who I myself wanted to hate -- but by the end of the story, he had won me over. Of course not everyone is going to understand or give a rat's ass about my learning experience from the author end. I expect not all readers are going to agree with Cameron's role in the series. While I've already received some very positive feedback on this release, I also know of a few Blue Ruin 1 readers who don't intend to give book two a second glance. But at the end of the day, I know that I wrote the story that demanded to be told. As for the readers who've stayed on board and already come to love Cameron as I have, well, I don't have to tell you that he's something special, and that the parting scene between him and Blue is one of the most heartfelt scenes I have ever written. (Yes, I cried when I wrote it, what can I say?)

Currently I am re-reading Interview with the Vampire, as I see Anne Rice's gothic influence rearing its head in the draft for Blue Ruin 3, perhaps due to the Lestat realization I came to after book two. (In fact in book three, Blue enters a rather gothy-looking living space and quips “What the hell is this? Interview with the Vampire?”) What with my love for Lestat, it's almost painful to read Interview now, and I actually find Louis quite annoying. Funny how my perspective has changed since that first reading back in seventh grade... Only in darkness can there be light, but it is those shades of gray where we truly see ourselves. A difficult character can challenge both author and reader alike to broaden their views, and I'm always up for a challenge.

On Conventions

I've given a lot of thought to promotions in person. More thought recently, that is, in the last month, since I know that Tease Publishing his heavy on author promotions. So I've been looking into a few conventions, namely Context 21 in Ohio, USA.

Now, a friend of mine who grew up in American, has been recently looking at ticket prices for a visit back home on holiday. Obviously, the off season tickets will be cheaper than peak season. Still, from Melbourne, Australia, the cost to Ohio would be steep, and that's without looking at hotel accommodations and the like.

This is where we get to thinking that writing from Australia to an American market is not unlike shooting oneself in the foot.

But no! I have been following the Australian Romance Readers Convention on Blogger (Yes, I am another person who is utterly addicted to the thing) and not only do I find that they are holding the convention -not in Sydney, but in Melbourne- I find that they are holding it, literally, within walking distance from my house.

Held on February 20-22, 2009. Of course, by that stage, I'll almost certainly have moved house to somewhere a little further out of the city, but okay, I'll be taking a train five stops instead of walking. I don't think I look fussed by that. On the whole, I feel excited!!

One of the speakers already picked up is Sherrilyn Kenyon, and for sure there will be the usual panels and various convention details that make conventions so exciting.

So. I'll definitely be going to that, picking up tickets as soon as they are available. I just have to wait for it to roll around, now.

Tanner might lose his patience and radio for back-up. Maneuvering the
Mustang with skill, she finally swerved to the side of the road near
an open field and stopped in a rolling cloud of dust.

Seconds later, Steve's patrol car whipped in behind the Mustang with
its blue lights still flashing. Cassie drew a deep breath. She swung
open the car door and stepped out of the Mustang to face the inevitable.

Steve leaped out of his patrol cruiser and stomped toward her. His jaw
was squared, his eyes burning, and he fumed. "Just what the hell do
you think you're doing, Cassie? You were flying like a bat out of hell!"

Oh shit! He's really mad. She winced. Perhaps I went too far, she
thought, with a pang of regret. However, it was too late now. It was
time to face the music.

"I was just trying to get air out of the fuel line," she hastily
explained, but her voice quivered under the weight of his stern glare.

"I should haul your ass to jail," Steve snapped with an air of
authority. He firmly placed his hands on his hips.

She swallowed hard. "I'm sorry, I didn't realize . . ." Her voice
trailed off, her gaze flickering from the officer's hot stare to the
silver handcuffs dangling from his belt. "You wouldn't, would you, Steve?"

"Don't tempt me, sunflower." The low growl of his voice tugged at
something primal deep inside her being. Slowly, she drew her eyes up
to meet his gaze. Her eyes widened, and she sank her teeth into her
bottom lip. The heaviness of his authority only added fuel to her
inner fire, kindling a wicked flame between her thighs.

Cassie blushed. "I'm sorry, Steve. Really. I only thought—"

"Thought?" He retorted with a smirk. "What you did was very foolish!
You could have lost control of that Mustang, as fast as you were going!"

The hair bristled on her neck, and a spark of defiance shot through
her. "What do you mean, lose control? I happen to be a damn fine
driver, Steve Tanner, and you know it! Or have you forgotten what it's
like to have a little fun?"

She saw him take a deep breath as he took a step back from her.
Cassie, however, couldn't read his mood. She only felt the burning of
her own anger mixed with adrenaline that still pumped through her veins.

"Okay." Steve exhaled with a nod. "Turn around with your hands on the
hood where I can see them. Legs spread." Steve touched his belt where
the silver cuffs glimmered in the afternoon sunlight.

"You're not serious," she hissed in disbelief. Her words, however,
were a mere whisper.

"Do it now, Cassie," he commanded.

Cassie slowly turned, her face flushing crimson while she laid her
palms on the heated hood of the Mustang. This is crazy! He's nuts! Her
mind raced while her heart pounded wildly in her chest.

"Spread your legs wider." His voice was even and firm. Any hint of
emotion seemed to be now well contained once again replaced by a cool,
confident demeanor. She let out a heavy sigh. "Oh, all right. I'll
cooperate." She felt Steve step behind her. Cassie gradually attempted
to look over her shoulder.

"Keep your eyes forward," Steve firmly reprimanded her. She quickly
snapped her eyes back ahead. She licked her lips nervously. Dad and
Sam are sure going to be pissed about this, she thought. Her stomach
churned with tension. What was her mother going to say? She knew she'd
never hear the end of it.

She felt the warmth of his big hands at her ankles. With slow, fluid
movements he moved up her calves. A twinge of arousal panged in her
sex when his hands brushed her thighs. Cassie gasped. This was not a
standard frisk!

Tease Tarot Acceptance!!

I just found out the best news in the most bizarre of ways! My novel submission for the Tease Tarot line with Tease Publishing has been accepted! Unfortunately for me, the acceptance letter was caught up in my spam folder, but I found it anyway but accidentally putting something else there and having to dig it out!

Color this the face of someone who's very excited! And luckily for me, this letter doesn't seem to be dated more than a day ago. Phew!

If you comment by replying to the emails by 11pm EST tonight and mention that you are indeed interested in being entered into the contest, you are eligible!!

The drawing will be done shortly thereafter and the lucky winner will get a character named after them in their WIP of choice, and mentioned in the foreword of that book. That could be any of the following:

- Shadows of the Dark Moon, the sequel to Blood of the Dark Moon in the Dark Moon series

might have frightened you."

"On the contrary, sir, it made me more curious."

"Curious?" He angled his head, studying me closely in the moonlight.
"How so?"

My skin prickled with nervous energy. Gathering up my courage, I
chose my reply carefully. "I was, er, am curious if you are
interested in a mortal slave, sir. A playtoy for your pleasure."

YOGA + WRITING

Last week I was hunched over my computer, my mind off in a different world of deadlines and vampires, when I glanced at the clock. Yikes! It was almost time for yoga class at my local YMCA! Saving my work, I shut down the computer and quickly put on my exercise clothes, heading down to the gym.

I take a gentle form of yoga called Vinyasa. It’s a flowing sequence of poses and deep breathing. It helps me to relax, listen to my body and quiet my mind. I’m very fortunate to have a wonderful teacher. Last week, she asked if there were any areas we’d like to focus on. Several of the students, including myself, wanted to target our backs, shoulders and necks from hunching over our computers. She happily obliged and we spent the class on special postures for those areas…and I came home wonderfully de-stressed and relaxed.

Yoga provides wonderful time-out from my busy day. Even though this class is only held once a week, I’m attempting to make this type of yoga a part of my regular routine too. Since I began writing as a career, I’ve learned that, as writers, we need to take care of ourselves…both body and mind. Yoga provides both for me. Maybe it will work for you…I highly recommend it.

Easter Break

I'm going away tomorrow for the Easter weekend. As I am in Melbourne, and Melbourne is highly known for its unpredictable weather, it is still summer-ish in this state. Although that has had it's days of being annoying up till now, I must say, it is terribly convenient, for I am going to be going to a beach house for the next four days!!

Wonderfully well wishes and safe times to everyone here over the holidays, and I will be back again some time next week.

Yes, we have cover art! Yes, my few remaining brain cells have leaked right out of my nose. I don't know what my Blue Ruin readers may make of this but personally, I am feeling Blue's pain here. Many kudos to the ever fabulous PL Nunn for once again capturing my characters not only in looks but personality, and creating an image that really gets to the heart of the story. A really...hot image...that gets to...the heart of...what were we talking about again? Oh, and I've been given an official release date of April 15th.
